Reception Visit London Zoo

School Trip

31.01.2024

On a chilly day in January, we had fun visiting London Zoo to find out more information about penguins, and to observe them in real life!

PPPpeering at Penguins!

We started by going to see a new arrival at the zoo – a two day old baby gorilla – who was being cuddled by his Mummy.  We were also very lucky to get up close to both lions and tigers!

We managed to glimpse emus, butterflies, Galapagos tortoises and Komodo dragons, and discussed how these very different animals all hatched out of eggs.

We saved the best until last… gathering to see the penguins being fed at Penguin Beach.  We learnt some super facts from their keeper, including that their nests are built from guano (penguin poo!), and that each penguin had unique spots on their tummy.  We watched the penguins swimming, and even jumping in and out of the water (porpoising)!  We spotted the two chicks, who are less than a year old, and have slightly different coloured feathers.
