Spencer House Orators

Congratulations to the winners of this year’s Spencer House Public Speaking Competition. Our adjudicator, Deborah Appleby, an experienced public speaking coach, was extremely impressed by the standard of all the finalists; the final result was as follows:

Year 6 Winner and Runner-Up:

Lucy Grunnell and Sophia Harley

Year 5 Winner and Joint Runners-Up:

Elsa Petersen and Jessica Ducat/Martha Stapleton

Year 4 Winner and Runner-Up:

Eunji Shin and Alexandria Ashton

Year 4 and Year 5 prepared talks on a subject of their choice, with a wide variety of topics – for example, Eunji debated whether “a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable” and Elsa spoke all about her aunt’s orphanage in Botswana.  Year 6 finalists had 20 minutes to prepare a talk entitled:   “Changes I would make if I were Headmistress – and things I would keep the same!”

Well done to all the finalists.  They gave entertaining and interesting talks, speaking with confidence and engaging the audience.  After much deliberation, the winners were announced and they enjoyed a trip to Wimbledon Books and Music to choose their prizes.
