Year 2 Remember

Year 2 Remembrance Activities

Year 2 girls have spent the last few weeks learning all about WWI and WWII, through a number of exciting activities and outings.  On Monday 11th November Year 2 Yellow visited the Wimbledon War Memorial to view wreathes and poppies and to pay their respects to those who gave up their lives in wars and conflicts since the Great World War.

The girls were also visited by Mr Greatrix who spoke to the girls about his experiences during his time in the army.  Some of the girls were able to wear some of Mr Greatrix’s Mess Uniform, which was great fun.

On Tuesday 19th November the girls in Year 2 visited the Poppy Factory in Richmond.  They learnt that the Queen’s wreath is made up of 83 poppies and took 5.5 days to make.  After a short film about the wars and conflicts the girls then went on a tour around the factory.  The girls had a chance to help the factory make up some poppies.  They managed to make 100 poppies while they were there!

Yesterday, the girls were very lucky to have a visit from Mr and Mrs Plastow, who both lived through and experienced WWII in Wimbledon.  Mrs Plastow is an ex Study girl and was evacuated to Bradley Court during the Blitz.  A full news story plus pictures from their visit will be posted later, so watch this space!  All in all the Year 2 girls have had a fascinating time exploring this era in history.
