French is taught by a specialist teacher to all pupils from Reception. Younger children are taught simple vocabulary through songs and games and girls' vocabulary and grammatical understanding are developed as they move up the school, with written work begun at Year 3. The needs of girls who are fluent French speakers are met by offering extension work in lessons.
Year 5 girls are invited to attend a residential trip to the Opal Coast in the summer term to develop their language skills, cultural awareness and confidence in speaking French.
There is a lunchtime Languages Club at Spencer House as well as a Latin Club, which is designed to introduce girls to aspects of Roman life and culture as well as Latin language.
In Year 6, girls are taught Spanish instead of French, with a revision course in French at the end of the year.
