Aims and Ethos
The Study encourages personal response and enjoyment in Art.
Our balanced programme of art, craft and design provides visual, sensual and tactile experiences to stimulate creativity and imagination through the exploration of a wide variety of materials and processes. Girls learn to make informal judgements and practical decisions whilst developing their creative and technical skills so that their ideas can be realised. We learn about different artists, designers and craft makers and about the function of art in contemporary life as well as different times and cultures.
It is our aim that when girls leave The Study they will take with them a love of art and the desire to be artistically creative in their own lives.
Art is taught throughout the school from Reception to Year 6. In the Pre-Prep Department, Art is taught across the curriculum, depending on the topic or subject. Our scheme of work is designed to give pupils a rich knowledge and understanding of art but has the flexibility to allow for spontaneity as well as planned cross-curricular projects.
The classrooms at Wilberforce House are very well equipped with an extensive range of resources for art and craft activities. At Spencer House our light and airy art studio provides a stimulating environment for creativity and is extremely well resourced.
Beyond the Classroom
We enjoy trips to galleries and museums, and participate in workshops with visiting artists. Girls are encouraged take part in competitions and to become involved in projects within the local community and nationally. For those with a keen interest in Art, there is a variety of weekly clubs at both Houses.
