The Christmas Fair

Girls in make-up Christmas cakes

The Study Christmas Fair is a highlight in our school calendar and this year's fair certainly lived up to expectations. The Study Association mums and dads worked very hard to provide a morning of fun, with lots of ways to spend our money.

Christingle Service at Westminster Abbey

Girl with candle

On Thursday 27th November Year 3 went to The Children's Society Christingle Service at Westminster Abbey. Four of our girls went up to the front to read prayers. We were very excited for them. My favourite part of the service was when we lit our Christingles and made a huge circle of light around the Abbey.

Victory for The Study at the Cross Country Running Event at the Richard Evans Memorial Grounds near Wimbledon Common

We were all really excited as we boarded the bus for the annual cross country running event. We had been practising hard, in all conditions – mostly wet and muddy – for the chance to challenge the other eleven schools taking part. We had four teams representing Years 3 to 6.

Year 5 Gold Medallists

As we waited for the final result, we knew we had done well: Years 3 and 6 both achieved the bronze award, Year 4 achieved the silver award and Year 5, my team, was awarded the gold award: a fantastic result! Finally the points had all been added up and the overall winner was announced – The Study! It was like a dream come true.

Exciting! Imaginative! Energetic!

On Monday 17th November The Image Musical Theatre Company visited us to perform The Jungle Book. I liked the way it was not a normal play: it was called an interactive performance because we were all included in the play, either singing or acting. The songs were really lively and energetic.

The costumes were very imaginative, particularly the tiger with his long coat and stripy orange and black mask. The background was busy with plants and vines; it really gave you the feeling of being deep in the jungle. The banana tree stood out from the other trees because it was brighter than all the others and the bananas looked so alive, I couldn't tell if they were real or not!

Jungle Book

The whole performance was exciting and; it certainly would not send you to sleep, make you fidget in your seat or make you wish you were somewhere else. I would be happy to recommend it to anyone who enjoys adventures and animals.

The Sound of Music…

On Friday 14th November we held the finals of the annual Scales Competition. It was very exciting, wondering what scales would be played. Miss Oakley, our cello teacher, judged the competition and presented the prizes. Katie and Gemma, Year 6, won the competition with their masterful flute duet in A minor, played as a canon. It was a really enjoyable assembly – and a nervous one too for the competitors!

The pianists

The Study Lunch Time Concerts have become a regular fixture on our Calendar. Anyone who learns an instrument is encouraged to take part and each term many girls volunteer to play. This term's concert at Spencer House was particularly special because the pianists played for the first time on our new grand piano.

Year 2 Remember

Girls at the war memorial

Girls in Year 2 were in a reflective mood on Friday 14th November when they walked across the Common to the Wimbledon Village War Memorial:

“We went to the War Memorial to remember all the people who went to war and were really brave.”
Rosie

“It was very interesting that there were poppy wreaths on the memorial. The wreaths had messages on them such as "in memory of" and the name of someone who died in the war.”
Ella

“We saw poppy wreaths and in the grass we saw some crosses. The crosses had poppies on them. People had put them there to remember the men and women who died in the war.”

Year 1 visits the V&A Museum of Childhood

Girls enjoying the toy displays

At the Museum of Childhood we had a toy workshop and we made some peg dolls. We made them because poor children long ago would play with them. They didn't have enough money to buy toys from the toy shop. They would have made them from a clothes peg or a stick. I really enjoyed making my peg doll.

The Rainbow Trust Visits the Study

Mrs Hartley shows Camelia and Betsy, Year 6 School Council Reps, some photographs of Rainbow House

Mrs Hartley, from Rainbow Trust, visited The Study on Friday 17th October to talk to all the girls. She told us all about the charity and the amazing work it does to support families who have a child with a terminal or life threatening illness. At the end of her talk we felt even more pleased we had chosen to support Rainbow Trust this term.

Year 1 enjoys a visit to Godstone Farm

Ella feeling the bristles on the pigs

At Godstone Farm I learnt that daddy cows are called bulls. I saw a piglet jump over another piglet. I learnt that pigs have bristles.
Maddie

At Godstone Farm I learnt how to spin wool. I fed hay to the goats for the first time. I enjoyed staring at the horses. I also liked stroking the snake called Matilda. She felt smooth.

The Woldingham Year 5 Netball Tournament

Year 5 Netball Team

We were all very excited about going to Woldingham School in Surrey to play in a tournament against 16 schools. We got off to a good start by winning our first match 6:2. We went on to win our next 5 matches before drawing with Glendower. There was a funny moment when we were playing the match against Glendower. Half way through one of the girl's skirts fell off and she had to run and find a safety pin. Luckily she thought it was funny too!

Our good results meant that we had won our side and we got through to the semi-finals. We then had to play the very tall team from Granville. Unfortunately they beat us and they went on to win the tournament. Despite being a really cold and rainy day we all really enjoyed the tournament.

We came first in two categories: Holly O'Brien's portrait was awarded first place in the Under 11 Category and the Year 4 Woodland Scene came first in the Under 11 Textile Category. Both pieces of artwork will now go through to the national competition final in November. We were also awarded Highly Commended in the Under 11 3D Category for our Year 4 Butterflies and in the Under 11 Textiles Category for our Year 3 Weaving. Congratulations to all who took part.

Year 2 Enjoy Learning About Eid

Eid Celebrations

The three day Eid celebrations began on 30th September this year so Nuraiya and Sheharbano in Year 2, along with their parents, kindly chose to share some of the customs for this very special and happy time of year. They looked fabulous in their saris and were the envy of their Year 2 classmates. Everyone enjoyed having their hands painted with decorative henna designs and sampling some delicious and very colourful sweets.

Royal College of Church Music Festival

On Friday 3rd October the Chamber Choir took part in the Royal College of Church Music Festival held at King's College School. It was great fun singing with so many schools. At first it took time getting used to singing with the different voices but we all pulled together in the end. At times it felt like you were drowning in sound, all the voices towering above your own. It was an amazing experience.

Harvest Festival

Harvest Festival

On Friday 26th September the whole school gathered together at Wilberforce House for our Harvest Festival. We were delighted to welcome two special guests. The Reverend Mary Bide, vicar of St Mary's Church, Wimbledon Village, and Mrs Christine Brown, from The Wimbledon Guild. Our service comprised hymns, readings and prayers, and the Reverend Mary Bide told us a story which reminded us of the importance of sharing. We are giving our Harvest Festival donations to The Wimbledon Guild which will redistribute the goods to organisations that care for people in need.

Supporting Rainbow Trust

Jessica and Millie

This term we are supporting Rainbow Trust, a charity which provides practical and emotional support to families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness. Jessica, who nominated the Rainbow Trust, and her friend Millie, Year 3, told us all about the amazing work that the charity does, including running a house in Leatherhead called Rainbow House, which provides breaks for families who have very sick children. Jessica ended her talk by saying, 'We are all lucky to be healthy and don't need help from Rainbow Trust, but many families do have children with very serious illnesses and they need our help.'

Year 3 Visit a Local World Famous Place

3M practising their tennis swings

On Tuesday 23rd September, Year 3 went on a trip to Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club. We talked about healthy living as we toured the courts. We are very lucky to have this famous club in our local environment.
3M

"I was very interested by all the facts we learned. One of the facts was that the grass had to be 8mm long and they had to measure it."
Zoe

"Can you believe that the people in the Lawn Tennis Club count the blades of grass there are on centre court."
Isabella

"I really enjoyed the trip to the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club. We weren't allowed to go on Centre Court, which is the biggest court there, because they are building a translucent roof which will open and shut."

Practice-a-thon Music

Violin Practice

Study girls have a long tradition of helping others and this term our musicians have got off to a great start by taking part in the children's cancer charity CLIC Sargent's, fund raising scheme, Practice-a-thon Music. The girls have been busy asking their family and friends to sponsor them to practise their instruments - a fantastic way to improve their musical skills and have fun while raising valuable funds to help children and young people with cancer.

The Author Oliver Jeffers visits Year 2

Oliver Jeffers

Year 2 enjoyed a fascinating and fun afternoon when author and illustrator, Oliver Jeffers, paid them a visit. As well as hearing extracts from his book, 'The Great Paper Caper', Year 2 watched Oliver create some illustrations and then they all had a chance to make paper aeroplanes.

"He had a very interesting story. It was about a bear who chopped down trees to make paper aeroplanes."
Tara

"I thought Oliver's drawings had so much detail even though he drew them so quickly."
Ishana

"I loved his visit because it was really interesting. I especially liked Oliver's drawings. My favourite was the bear."
Sheharbano
